Looking to the Future with our Architectural Technologists

World Architecture Day is on 5th October and we wanted to mark it by celebrating two members of our team, who after studying through the Guernsey Apprenticeship Scheme have recently qualified as Architectural Technologists.

Monique Michel and Josh Tulie have now completed their BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction & the Built Environment at the Guernsey College of Further Education and are now both looking to the future with great enthusiasm.

The BTEC is a universally recognised qualification, it provides the basis of knowledge needed to understand construction methods, materials, and processes and provides a firm foundation to build upon as one progresses through the industry.

Monique although having completed her BTEC Level 4, still continues to study her Interior Design Degree and Josh has plans to enrol online with RIBA with Oxford Brookes University to further his qualifications and knowledge.

“I would recommend the HNC course to anyone who wants to become an architect.”

Josh joined our team after graduating from a degree in Media Production & Media Studies, something which aids him greatly with the design and technological side of our business. “I’ve always had a bit of a weird fascination with taking things apart just to see how they work, which didn’t make me a particularly popular son,” he mused. “I guess I have the same interest in buildings, taking all the components and seeing how they work in different scenarios. I don’t know how many people can relate to this, but my first inkling that designing buildings was something I liked to do was actually from playing ‘The Sims’. I never actually played the game properly, I would design the house and then move on to a new plot.”

Monique has similar memories of designing and drawing from a young age. "I have always been interested in design, for as long as I can remember. As a child I spent most of the day painting, colouring and drawing. My parents would often find themselves questioning why they bought me birthday presents, as all I really wanted was the big cardboard packaging to make dens out of! I also enjoy problem solving which is definitely a big part of the job. Everyday brings something new.”

Outside of work, Monique loves nothing more than being with animals (she is both a dog and a rabbit lover) and in nature. “I love to be outdoors, especially in the Summer.” Josh recently bought his first home and so is looking into doing some home improvements of his own. “I enjoy creating digital art and cycling, though not usually at the same time!” He is also looking forward to getting back out skiing again, but as with everything this year, he isn’t sure when that will happen.

Both enjoy their work at Create. “I will say that working at Create has always been a joy,” says Josh, “You can have frank and open discussions about design decisions, work situations, life situations and I’ve been able to suggest and implement new and innovative industry technologies and techniques like VR. Create have also helped me by supporting me whilst I trained over the past four years, for which I am very grateful.”

“Everyday is different, facing new challenges.”

Monique agrees. “Everyday is different, facing new challenges.” she says, “I enjoy being able to work on different types of projects, as well as being involved with many different stages of a project. We use Virtual Reality on many projects which enables our clients to visualise concept design proposals, which is really exciting.”

Congratulations to both Monique and Josh on passing their BTEC HNC exams and we look forward to continuing to support them as their future careers progress.
