2018 Guernsey Design Awards

Vote La Nouvelle Maraitaine for the Residential New Build (over £250k) in the 2018 Guernsey Design Awards!

We were so proud to be appointed to work on the design and delivery of this new ‘state of the art’ extra care facility.

The Guernsey Housing Association appointed PRP Architects and Create to work collaboratively in the design and delivery of a new ‘state of the art’ extra care facility in St. Sampsons. The development replaced Maison Maritaine, a 1960’s care home no longer considered fit for purpose.

The development was built in two phases to enable to the existing community to remain on site until their new homes were completed. Phase one provided a day centre and 50 extra care apartments with communal facilities for the existing residents. Phase 2 comprised a further 18 apartments. The apartments offer independent living for older people and people with Learning Disabilities, with access to 24 hour on-site care. The apartment designs are based on the HAPPI principles, providing spacious, attractive and enabling environments which can be easily adapted to suit residents’ changing needs. The design is based on the ‘Core & Cluster’ model providing the flexibility to change one cluster to serve a different user group if required. The clusters are arranged to enclose secure gardens, designed to encourage their active use by residents. The communal areas and day centre are positioned to be readily visible on approach. The communal hub includes a restaurant, flexible lounge areas and a pamper suite with hairdressers, assisted bathing and therapy/consultation room. The day centre, which has its own entrance, can be segregated or integrated into the communal areas as required. Through the massing and use of traditional forms and materials the building sits comfortably within its rural setting. We are experts on extra care facilities, by understanding the needs of persons with disabilities we can create buildings that are inclusive and can be enjoyed by all.
