projects Les Courtillets

Our brief for Les Courtillets was to provide a large new Kitchen, Dining and Family room extension to the rear of a traditional Guernsey farmhouse. Our response was to form a contemporary space incorporating traditional building materials and techniques. The large open plan and double height space incorporating oak frame and glazed wall to the perimeter contrasts with the more intimate spaces within the farmhouse. A glazed roof section provides light from above during daylight hours, whilst carefully positioned lights illuminate the beams and trusses at night. The existing rear entrance to the original lean-to structure has been successfully relocated to the side to provide easier access, and is marked by the introduction of a new glazed walkway linking the original farmhouse with the new extension.
We were approached by the client through the Architect in the house scheme organised by the RIBA and Guernsey Society of Architects. As a practice we are actively involved with Architect in the House on an annual basis.

“This house is a listed Guernsey farmhouse which has been “Victorianised” and extended with a two storey extension in the 1960’s. Create’s brief was to substantially remodel this rather ugly extension and reduce its size to recover views of the garden from the old house."
