projects The Granary

Formally known as ‘The Café du Moulin’ this stunning granite building was up until only recently used as a restaurant. The new owners saw the opportunity to convert the restaurant into a dwelling whilst retaining the top floor as self-catering units. The original building, which as the name suggest was a granary, which is believed to have worked up until the early part of the twentieth century. The main features of the building are the three large double height arches located to the front elevation, which had been partially blocked in during a conversion carried out in the 1970’s. Our brief was to re-plan the existing building to provide a contemporary dwelling with living and entertaining spaces at ground floor level, with bedrooms to the first floor. Externally a new terrace has been designed to provide an outdoor seating area for both the new owners, and guests occupying the self catering units. The original arches have been opened up to provide uninterrupted views of the gardens, whilst allowing natural light to flood into the building. Internally at first floor level, the central features are the two elliptical bathroom pods, which serve to create the unique double height entrance hall and stairs.
